Dental Anxiety in Children — And What You Can Do About It

Dental anxiety is one of the most common — and most misunderstood — reasons children avoid the dentist. The crying, the freezing, the refusal to sit in the chair: these are not behavior problems. They are real responses that require a real solution.

At Germantown Pediatric Dental Center, we have helped hundreds of children overcome their fear — and get the dental care they need, safely and without trauma.

For these families, finding the right dentist is not just about comfort — it is about safety, trust, and a clinical team that knows exactly what your child needs before they even sit in the chair. That level of care does not happen in a standard dental office. It happens here.

There Is a Solution — And It Starts Here

Dental anxiety is real — and for some children, it makes a standard dental visit impossible. Total sedation allows Dr. Echandy to complete all necessary work in a single visit, while your child sleeps comfortably and safely at Shady Grove Hospital or Shady Grove Children’s Surgery Center.

Dr. Echandy has over 25 years of experience caring for children whose fear made traditional dental care impossible. She has helped hundreds of families break the cycle — for good.

Why Families in Germantown Trust Dr. Echandy for
Their Child's Most Complex Dental Care

Dr. Irma Echandy, DDS, has over 25 years of experience in pediatric dentistry — and is one of the few specialists in the region who performs procedures under total sedation in a full hospital setting.

Every case is performed at Shady Grove Hospital or Shady Grove Children’s Surgery Center, with a complete medical team supporting every step. This is not sedation in a dental chair — this is your child in a hospital operating room, with the highest standard of safety available.

Hundreds of families in Germantown, Gaithersburg, Rockville and surrounding areas have trusted Dr. Echandy with their child’s most complex dental needs. Many of them had been told there was no solution — until they found her.

When Fear Takes Over
— And the Dentist Becomes the Enemy

For some children, dental anxiety goes far beyond nerves. It becomes a full physical response — racing heart, crying, shaking, complete refusal to cooperate.

No amount of reassurance helps. No distraction works.

Parents leave appointments feeling defeated. Children leave feeling ashamed. And the dental work keeps piling up — untreated, worsening, quietly becoming a bigger problem with every missed visit.

This cycle is more common than you think. And it is not your child’s fault — or yours.
